It is not often that a small community news organization takes on a concern of national interests. Not using its own resources at least. Today an out of the way news web site, which provides news to about 30,000 residents in Northwest Maricopa County Arizona ... 35 miles from downtown Phoenix kicked up some desert dust.
wittmannnews.com challenged ESPN to stop airing its broadcast to an affiliate in Washington D.C.
Going clear to the top. wittmannnews.com editor Benjamin Groff contacted ESPN'S President. wittmannnews.com informed the heads of ESPN, all news containing ESPN, would be removed from websites owned by the parent company of the small news organization -GroffNewsMedia.com . Going further, Wittmann News and Groff News Media, also insisted that any National Advertising Campaigns the owner of Groff News Media is affiliated with, would cease advertising with any affiliate within any ESPN station...that is...if there was not swift action to stop the bashing taking place in our Nations Capitol!
The cause? A transgender sports basketball member who had been embraced by the local Junior College basketball team's players and community was singled out by a pair of radio show hosts. The radio station said it had took "private" corrective procedures concerning language which spewed hatred and ignorance conveyed during an earlier broadcast. The local D.C. radio station said on Monday they could not comment about what the corrective action was. Why? Because according to station management the contracts with the two radio show hosts prohibited being ridiculed by having their conduct known in public. The language they used to try to destroy was much worse, it was so extreme wittmannnews.com did not post the interview. It can be found on line through various services.
The email to the President and Vice President at ESPN, along with the details released to Wittmann News-Groff News Media are available on the sports page at wittmannnews.com - the report focuses not so much on the tag team bravado which was intended for the Nations Capitol radio market's audience. Asking ESPN if they supported the actions in the spirit in which the two "professional" radio hosts, attacked another human with spews of hatred not heard since blacks was first allowed into Colleges and given the okay to ride up close in the buses. The two laughed during the show saying "it" (a human) was not deserving of any rights.
Wittmann News - Groff News Media should be saluted for taking a stance against such practices. Especially because the news site is centered in the most Conservative Pocket of Arizona. Where Transgendered people are not well accepted. Groff News Media - Wittmannnews.com made a statement and stood firmly removing all content utilized from ESPN Network. In a small Arizona community this isn't going to help attract a greater audience. Instead it will show the local residents that despite the reasons one can find to use tactics that suggest hate and approve of violence against anyone, there will be swift action protecting those who might otherwise go unheard!
Two hours after Groff News Media contacted ESPN the sports radio duo were both suspended pending an investigation. A direct contradiction to the claim the day before that contract agreements prevented public disclosure of any human relations involving the two radio announcers.
